22 Countries in 58 days or Debbie Does Europe - Summer of 1983

I had always wanted to go to Europe. I'd been all over Europe via books by Georgette Heyer, Dick Francis, Robert Ludlum and of course, the gazillion Harlequin Romances that I'd been reading since I was 14. Going to Cal State Hayward, I'd see flyers for studying abroad, and group tours - go to Europe or Asia! One flyer caught my eye - ISE - The International Student Exchange - Club Europa - run out of the University of Illinois in Urbana.

Early on, I sent off for a brochure. They offered these group tours of Europe
  • Europe Sampler - 15 days/7 Countries
  • Europe Discovery - 22 days/10 countries
  • Europe Experience - 32 days/15 countries
  • Europe Adventure - 42 days/17 countries
  • Europe Exploration - 58 days/22 countries

If I was going to do this, I was going to do it good, so I decided on the Europe Exploration trip. It would cost about three thousand dollars - air fare, hotel, transportation, entrance fees, all breakfasts and most dinners all included. It would be an escorted tour - this slightly mollified my Mom. I was going to go by myself, not knowing anybody - my first major time away from home. I had lived at home through college, ya see.

I started saving up my money, and was all set to go right after I graduated from California State University, Hayward. I was 22 and was not very knowledgeable about the world. I had been a full time student AND a worked a full time job. Not a whole lot of time for much else.

So, over the next 58 days, I'm going to post my journal and revisit my 22 year old self and the adventure of Europe.
