Personal Space...

My Mom used to go on these nesting urges every once in a while. You'd wake up in the morning, and the living room furniture had all been mysteriously moved around. Wonder how many times Dad caught her at it on his way to work at 3am. She didn't do it during the day - Mom was a night owl and did some of her best thinking at 2am. I have inherited that gene.

Well, it's not 2am, so this may not be the best of ideas. The layout of the bookshelves in the living room has bugged me and I have nobody to blame but myself. I have 4 wood bookshelves - 2 in one style, 2 in another. The first style is taller than the second. Currently the shelves are lined up on one wall: dvd shelf, tall shelf, dvd shelf, tall shelf, dvd shelf, shorter tall shelf, dvd shelf. My sense of symmetry has been off because the two taller shelves are close together and the run of shelves ends with the shorter tall shelf. I've been wanting to switch the middle tall shelf with the shorter tall shelf for OVER 4 YEARS. It's just been bugging me and I hadn't done anything about it.

The other thing that has been bugging me is that the entertainment center is against the wall of windows. The apt is much darker and feels even more smaller than it already is. I originally wanted to move the entertainment center against the opposite wall, but the heater is in the way - and even if I put the shelf right up against the heater - that would be bad as there are heater vents in the side of the unit.

So, this weekend I started going through my cds. My, I have a lot of duplicates. Then I decided to move the cd shelf away from the heater wall and move one of the tall bookshelves there.

The other tall bookshelf is switching with the shorter tall shelf which is closest to the front door. The former shelves wall will now have shorter tall bookshelf, entertainment center, shorter tall bookshelf and maybe if there's any space left, a dvd shelf or two. The cd shelf will go underneath the wall of windows.

This is going to take several days. Before I can move anything, I have to empty the shelf of books first.

What I am afraid will happen is that everything will get moved and then I'll hate it after all.

I just need to move.

If nothing else...
... the shelves will get dusted! Amazing how much dust collects behind the rows of books on shelves ain't it?

Then as you're sorting the books to reshelve them, you'll find one that you haven't read in AGES, so you'll peek at a page or two, and two hours later...

And the next person who walks in will say "You've moved stuff around!' Like no one else has EVER moved furniture EVER...

Have fun!

Re: If nothing else...
I recently emptied out all of my bookshelves in order to paint. I found a lot of books that I forgot I had. I also found a lot that I was actually willing to part with, realizing that I won't be reading them again. The upside is that when the bookcases went up again, I was able to add several boxes of books that I hadn't had room for and I still got to give the local library some of my castoffs. Good all around.

Try it. Just don't reshelve everything until you sit with it for a day or so. I think it will be awesome.
