Nintendo DS vs Game Boy Advance SP

I need some advice please.
K & I have finally gotten G's blessing on a handheld game device for Kyle. Which one do you recommend we get??

Kyle is turning 8 on Thursday. He's played with at least the Game Boy in some form at his friends' house.

Pros & Cons would be appreciated.

I have a GBA SP, which I bought specifically so I could play old Mario games and Zelda again. It's okay- and in fact, may be better for smaller hands. The controls are in about the same configuration as the standard Nintendo control, and the backlighting is much improved over the GBA.

That said, if I were going to purchase one now, I'd definitely go with the DS. The touch screen is pretty cool, and there are a bunch of "brain games" that Kyle might enjoy, and would fall into that nebulous "educational" category. I've fiddled with a couple in stores, and like the setup, but if he's going to lose little bits, he's gonna lose the stylus. Might be good to pick up an extra if you think he's going to drop it. It's also a bit bigger in the hands, which may not be a problem, but if he has small hands it could be a stretch for some of the buttons.

Happy hunting! *grin* Wish you were my Auntie!

The DS plays all the old games, as well as the new. The screen is lit better and the styli are cheap to replace if lost. It has a built-in rechargeable battery and you can play while plugged in. Also the newest version is much lighter--the first DS was really top heavy. As an investment the DS is the better buy.

If Kyle is the kind that loses and breaks, buy a used system (the GBA SP would be good) as "Training Wheels" to teach him how to care for the system until he demonstrates he understands. Just a thought.
