Drat parking meters

Had a family meeting in Berkeley this morning. Wowee!! I found a parking space. Tried to feed the meter, but it took my money and flashed "FAILURE! Out of Service"
I think it had been flashing even before I had put any money in. Well, I had tried to feed the meter.

Came back from meeting and found a @!*@!@ parking ticket on the windshield.
Parking meter was now flashing "METER EXPIRED"

Dogoneit! It's a $30 ticket. I'm thinking about filing an administrative claim against it. I don't know if it's going to get me anywhere, but it's the principle of the thing.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

I don't know about CA, but in NY, it's illegal to park by a broken meter. You get a ticket for it. :)

So if you're in an area where parking is very limited, what do you do?

You did not break the meter, it was already broken.

The law makes no sense. =)

Then you're screwed. I think the (stupid) idea is that it's a spot you have to pay for, so if you can't pay for it, you can't use it. Dumb.

That blows! I'm with Alex--file the claim. It can't hurt.
